The purpose of performance assignment #2 was to produce a PSA for Pass It On. Pass It On is the foundation for a better life where their objective is to promote positive values and encourage viewers to pass them on. For this assignment we were given a live read copy of different scripts to choose and produce. I selected the “Making A Difference” script as I felt it was very personal to me while pre-reading it. With this script I felt as I was able to use my voice in a way to show different emotions and get the message across to the audience. Overall this assignment taught me to use the tone of my voice to show more emotion, mix my voice and music together by starting with the music lower and bringing it up in volume, implement my knowledge from PA #1 to prefect my work, and making sure to uplift the listening audience with the message.
Performance assignment allowed me to take my script that I wrote in written assignment #1 and produce it to be aired on WMCO 90.7 FM. The purpose of this assignment was to produce a WMCO promo. This assignment was my first time producing something in a studio to be aired live. This meant I had to use new programs I’ve never seen. These programs included DAD (Digital Audio Delivery) and Adobe Audition. DAD is a complete audio playout automation and control system for radio to make everything run smoothly. While Adobe Audition is a professional audio editing application. We were also given the freedom to choose our own music in order for it to match our own voice and the tone we used to vocalize the message. Overall this assignment taught me the basics of DAD and Adobe Audition, how to run a studio board, and how to find the best sound quality in order to mix your voice recording and music together.
During this project I went on WMCO 90.7 FM to be a part of The Orbit News Desk radio show. This episode aired during October 2020. This is a 30 minute radio show that includes local, state, national, and world news. On the show I was called anchor #1 meaning I read the introduction for the show and introduce myself (Kesten Taylor) and my co-host (Zakai Palm). You can find more of my work throughout the show at 0:35, 6:20, and 11:28. Overall this project taught me how to mimic dialogue with another host meaning Zakai and I would speak in a way so the radio show would have a sense of flow and not distract the audience away from the message. It also taught me to expand my knowledge using Rundown Creator which is a software that run in your web browser and allows you to collaborate with your entire team to create rundowns and write scripts for radio. The third thing that this project taught me was to sound more confident and talk to the audience as they’re my best friend while on air. This allowed for the audience to feel more involved and have a personal connection with the audience.
During this project I went on WMCO 90.7 FM to be a part of The Muskie Sports Blast radio show. This was an October 2020 episode. Muskie Sports Blast is a WMCO radio show where the WMCO Sports Team interviews with Muskingum players and coaches, plus college and national sports talk. I was given the opportunity to talk with the men’s soccer assistant coach, Seth Levy. During the show the host asks different questions to get an inside view of what a college coaches’ life looks like. Toward the end of the show we ask the fun questions and that’s where I came in. You can find me asking questions from 3:00 to 5:25. Overall this project taught me how to talk while live on the radio, how to properly interview a guest, and how to prepare for a show by pre-reading and planning out the show with the main host.
